SharePoint 2010 will say goodbye to the SSP (Shared Service Provider) and welcome in the Service Application model. If you used a service within an SSP, every web app tied to that SSP consumed that service. Now, with the use of individual service apps, you can pick and choose which service(s) you want that web app to utilize. Also, the administration of the service apps will move to the Central Administration site instead of having its own site (like SSP did) – giving you one site for all administration. The included service apps are listed below, more detail on these later…
- Access Services
- Business Data Catalog (now called Business Connectivity Services)
- Excel Services
- Lotus Notes Connector
- Managed Metadata Service
- People
- Search
- Secure Store Service
- State Service
- Usage and Health Data Collection
- Visio Graphics Service
- Web Analytics
- Word Conversion
