Once you complete the installation of Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint, you might want to verify that it will properly catch virus infected documents that are uploaded to SharePoint. To do this, we will follow the steps outlined by Microsoft in this article. As stated, the antivirus industry has issued what is called the EICAR standard to assist in testing antivirus installations. Keep in mind; this is NOT a real virus!

First, copy the below text into notepad, then save the file as EICAR.TXT:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Now, log into your SharePoint site and try to upload EICAR.TXT to a document library of your choice. If you are presented with the following, then you know that Forefront is monitoring your SharePoint farm:

As noted, a virus was found and “This file cannot be saved to the document library.” Your installation has now been verified and Forefront is protecting SharePoint!
