Installing SharePoint Server 2010 Cumulative Update 1

SharePoint 2010

Follow the below guide to install Cumulative Update 1 for SharePoint Server 2010:

  • Download the appropriate hotfixes for SharePoint Server 2010: KB2028568, KB983497, KB2281364, KB2124512, and KB2204024
  • Log into each SharePoint server using the same account that you used to initially install SharePoint. This account should have dbcreator and securityadmin rights on the SQL server that is part of your SharePoint farm.
  • On one of the servers, open up Central Administration > Upgrade and Migration > Check product and patch installation status and take notice of the current build version 14.0.4763.1000

  • On each web front end server, open up Services.msc and stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service to prevent users from getting into SharePoint during the upgrade
  • Install the five hotfixes on each SharePoint server in the farm. Start with the SharePoint Foundation hotfix, then the remaining SharePoint Server hotfixes. On the KB983497 install, you might get a screen to stop some services before continuing. Some of the hotfixes may also require a reboot. Perform the reboot before moving forward in installing the next hotfix.

  • Once all the installers have been completed, go back to the server that hosts Central Administration and run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard
    • Start > All Programs > Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products > SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard
  • Click Next

  • Click Yes

  • Click Next

  • Initiating the upgrade sequence

  • Upgrading SharePoint Products. Notice that it now gives you the running percent complete for this task.

  • Configuration Successful! Click Finish to launch Central Administration

  • Go to Upgrade and Migration > Check product and patch installation status and take notice of the new build version 14.0.5114.5003 for the updated items. Also, notice that it provides a link to the KB article for details on what was fixed.

  • While still in Central Administration, go to Upgrade and Migration > Check upgrade status to see that the upgrade succeeded

  • Last, but not least, pat yourself on the back!

Thanks for the excellent article! It’s important to note what you mentioned about SharePoint Foundation. SharePoint Server 2010 relies on SharePoint Foundation, so need to make sure to run Foundation hotfixes first, just like you said. If you know of anyone that needs SharePoint assistance in Oklahoma City, is a great company.
